A Mother's Day Gift {Seattle Family Photographer}

It was such a joy to meet this family! They had purchased their session last October to be a Christmas gift for grandma. As you all know, life can easily get in the way if you don't make it a priority. So 8 months later they were ready and apparently it was worth the wait. We had so much fun! Meet Kaitie- Rep for Newport High School {Bellevue Senior Photography}

Kaitie is my final rep from Newport High School. She is so fun- like a mix of a serious adult and typical teenager combined into one! We did her session at Luther Burbank Park. She and her family spent much of her childhood at this park, it was fun hearing all the memories as we walked along.

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go? Why?

I would return to a place I've already been. For three or four years, my family used to go to a place in Canada called Chatterbox Falls in Princess Louisa Inlet. The name to me is magic. I see it so vividly as it appears at sun set- the high walls of the two cliffs on either side show the line of the sun as it disappears. The stubborn green trees clinging to the vertical sides turn gold in the sun, while those in shadows deepen. The falls at the end of the narrow slit keep falling, and though the sun doesn't touch them, the pools collecting at the bottom are so blue with the fresh water, turning dark green and black as they run into the salt water of the sound. But that wall of pure water- it shows me the strength of the unseen; though not a person watches, the waterfall has this strength, this continuity, this sense of sureness in what it is. It is forever. When my family first floated into the inlet at , I knew it would be an image I would carry with me for the rest of my life. I would love to return.

What book are you currently reading? How is it?

I actually just finished a book. It's called AP Language and Composition Review. It is horrible. Luckily I finished reading it last night and took the test today. I'm looking forward to my next book, a sci-fi fantasy one. One of my favorite genre, Fire will Fall is about bioterrorism and how it effects lives all over the world. I don't know how it will turn out, but I'm hoping it won't be a knock off of other bioterrorist books.

What are your plans after high school?
I want to go to college after high school. I'm hoping to attend an out of state school with a scholarship and then graduate with a high ranking in Biochemistry. I want to then go to a good graduate school and get a degree in Toxicoligy or Genetics. I love chemical experiments and science and while it may not be my strength, it is definitely my interest. After undergrad, I'd like to return to Washington to live near my family.

If you won the lotto, what would be the first thing you do?
I would buy a car. No seriously, totally typical teenager thing, but it sucks to have my friends all drive me around to every place I go. After that, I would put everything in savings for college. College is expensive and I am one child of five- paying my way through, even with a scholarship would make me feel better about the strain I sometimes put on my parents.

What do you hope you’ll remember most about your senior year?

I really want to remember two things- one is my friends and the last year we as a group would be so close. The other is the last year with my little brother. For the longest time, he was my best friend. And now, he's so old and yet so immature! Fifteen months my junior, he's two grades younger but he's always been there with me. Through the divorce, remarriage, and tyrant step-siblings that have become friends, I want to remember this as the last year when my brother and I will really live together and be as close as we have been.

Awaited Arrival {Sammamish Maternity Photographer}

Isn't she beautiful?!? Jenae is my step-sister from Colorado. She and her husband are expecting their first child this summer. She came for a baby shower and to visit her Washington family before the baby arrives. I felt so special because I was able to get some one-on-one time with her, which when someone is only here for three days, is quite a luxury!

We had so much fun with her session. She had all sorts of ideas and was even bold enough to go with me to someone's property to ask if we could use their castle exterior as a backdrop. Check out those pictures at the bottom! Anyway, we had a ton of fun and got some amazing pictures. Good luck with the delivery, sis!

I love babies and this is one of the first newborn sessions I had that I didn't get peed on- success! This is baby George Edward at 7 days old. I just saw him yesterday and it's amazing how much they grow in a week, he already looks like a little man.

Here you can see this family's first session a year and a half ago. Then we did another session last year for William's first birthday. I love it when families keep coming back for more!

Hayley's Amazing Seattle Senior Session {Seattle Senior Photographer}

Hayley is one of my new reps for 2012 seniors. She attends Hazen High School and was recommended to me by her sixth grade teacher (my mother-in-law)! It’s a great fit and Hayley is an inspiration. She is so honest, sweet, and full of integrity. I know that she is a bright light among the students at Hazen.

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go? Why?
If I could travel anywhere in the world, I would absolutely go to Ireland. I spent 3 days there a few years ago, and I have been dreaming of going back ever since.

What book are you currently reading? How is it?
I am reading Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy, and it's one of the best books I've ever read.

What are your plans after high school?
My after high school plans change all the time. Right now, my goal is to attend a four year university, preferably in Boston or somewhere else on the East coast. I'd like to double major in social work and something related to journalism. After that, I'd like to get my master's degree in social work, and then I'd like to work for a nonprofit to end human trafficking or do something that allows me to write and travel. But I'm not quite sure yet.

*Me again- How awesome is it that she wants to help end human trafficking. The thought of it makes us all sick, but Hayley wants to actually do something about it! Hayley, best of luck, I hope you do help end human trafficking!!!

If you won the lotto, what would be the first thing you do?
If I won the lotto, I would put all the money in the bank so I could pay for college. If I had any left over, I would spend it on travelling and donations to charities.

What do you hope you’ll remember most about your senior year?
For my senior year, I hope my best memories will be with my friends during all of the special traditions reserved for seniors, like Senior Sunrise and Senior Ball.

With Only Moments Left till the Wedding {Kirkland Engagement Photographer}

John and Jessi are getting married in three weeks. I’m glad they fit me into their busy schedule with so much to do. Top Ten Places I Get My Inspiration {Top 10 Tuesdays}

Top 10 Places I Get My Inspiration

10- Kids’ Views of the World: I teach fourth grade for my day job. I also get to teach a photography club. Wow, I have learned so much from my students and the pictures they take. There are just some pictures they take that open adults up to a whole new world that we haven’t seen since we were kids.

9- Architecture/Interior Design: Texture, colors, and designs put together by professionals always give me ideas for ways I could use the colors, theme, or texture in my portraits.

8- Magazines (travel, wedding, National Geographics): I’m obsessed with travel magazines for many reasons- one of them being that I love the photos of all that amazing scenery. I strive to capture photos like that when I’m traveling and in my everyday surroundings. I love wedding magazines for their editorial, fashion style photography. And National Geographics have mesmerized me since I was a kid. I have always believed pictures are worth a thousand words, as I “read” the pictures of those magazines, I’m opened up to a whole new world and cultures I wouldn’t get to experience otherwise.

7-Words (lyrics of songs, verses from the Bible): Words put together create such visuals. I try to recreate those visuals in my head to show others. Again, “a picture is worth a thousand words”, so hopefully my images can add something to those already inspiring words.

6- People Watching: Haha, have you ever just watched people? And I don’t mean at the mall to sit there and judge those wrapped up in materialism. No, I mean watch the people that God has created, noticing their smiles, their habits, the way they talk, their mannerisms... If you haven’t, try it. It’s amazing how we are all so different, yet so similar down to the core.

5- Digital Photography School: www.digital-photography-school.com is such an incredible website for newbies and professionals. They have amazing tutorials, challenges, and just an open network between photographers who are trying to better their craft.

4- Facebook: I think I’m addicted to Facebook. I “like” 184 pages, most of which are photography related. I love seeing what other photographers are doing, what specials they’re offering, what props they’re using, what locations local photographers are shooting at, etc. On facebook, we photographers aren’t competitors, we love to share with each other, help each other learn new things. It’s an amazing community to be a part of!

3- Real Life Lighting: I find that in the last two years, I look at the world differently. I’m noticing shadows, soft lighting, catch lights, harsh light, moody lighting, etc. I often think, “Oh shoot, I wish I had my camera.” I’m learning to use the light that is available and learning how to control it. I’m finally beginning to understand what the old pros meant when they told me that you have to understand lighting to be a good photographer.

2- The Beauty of God’s Creation: Just looking at God’s creation is enough to want to capture it on “film”. As the seasons change and things come and go, I will always have them image to go back to, to remember the beauty that God created and placed before me. Nothing a human can create can compare with God’s creations- why wouldn’t I want to mimic what so perfectly designed?

1- OTHER PHOTOGRAPHERS: Even though I proclaim to be a portrait photographer, I am constantly following other “types” of photographers. Following them on facebook, reading their blogs, going on "field trips" with local photography groups, trying to become the best photographer I can be (not just in the world of portraits). Most photographers are amazing and are willing to help you in any way they can.

Top Ten Reasons to Travel {Top 10 Tuesdays}

I'm going to start implementing Top 10 Tuesdays. Granted they probably won't be every week, but I'll try to include a Top 10 at least once a month. So without further adieu...

Top Ten Reasons to Travel

10- To experience different climates! When you live in Seattle, sometimes you need some sunshine close to the equator when you’ve been in gray, drizzly rain for the last four months. I’m just saying!

9- To meet new people! On our most recent trip to Costa Rica we became friends with locals, international students, and other travelers. We volunteered with YWAM and met amazing locals from Costa Rica and many other students from around the world. We also met a local family who my uncle knows and introduced us to online, then we met in person in San Jose. We also made lots of new friends with other travelers.

Hint: To try to become friends with the locals, speak their language. Even if you don’t know much, try, the gesture goes a long ways!

8- To get away from normal life! I love not watching TV, answering phone calls, and not being constantly “plugged in”. When we travel there are way too many things to do and see then to spend all our time connected. You know life is good when the only pressures you have are to decide what to do and where to eat!!!

7- To experience culture! There are many similarities between humans around the globe, but there are also many things that make us different. Find those things and treasure them. Language, architecture, hobbies, transportation, fashion, religion, etc.

6- To realize that you don’t need much to survive! It’s amazing how much “stuff” we have at home that we think we need. When we travel we learn that all we need is food, clothes, shelter, and a little money for the “extra” stuff.

5- To experience activities you can’t do at home! When in Rome, do as the Romans. When in Hawaii, surf. When in Australia, dive. When in Colorado, ski or snowboard. When in the Alps, hike. You get the idea- do amazing things you wouldn’t have the opportunity to do otherwise.

4- To try new things! Eat new foods, strike up a conversation with a stranger, do something adventurous. My husband is afraid of heights, but when he travels, he “does as the Romans do.” While traveling he has flown in a helicopter, zipped off a platform 600 feet above the ground, and taken gondolas up the Swiss Alps.

3- To get out of your bubble! Get out of your comfort zone and experience the world the way other people do. Do what they do, eat what they eat, find joy in the things they find joy in!

2- You only live once! You’ll never look back at the end of your life and wish you hadn’t gone on that vacation. You will realize that travel enriches your life and that it helped make you who you are. Do the things you want to do, travel the world, learn, see, absorb and enjoy everything that our wonderful earth has to offer us.

And the number one reason to travel from a photographer’s standpoint…

1- To take awesome photographs! Take pictures to capture the memories for when your mind starts to forget them.

You know it's going to be a fun session when you pick up a naked baby (who just went to the bathroom) when you arrive and 30 seconds later she's peeing ALL over you! Haha, I've been peed on by babies before, but the quantity was amazing for such a little thing and it was so quick after I walked into their home. (=

Anyway, we put the clothes back on and got going. Unfortunately, we never got any completely naked shots, awake babies don't like being cold. But we did get some great photos of Big Brother giving his Little Sister some love!

This family has to be the most die-hard Duck fans I know (and I know of lot of them)! The parents met at University of Oregon, fell in love, and now have a fabulous little boy named Autzen. A Walk in the Park {Issaquah Family Photographer}

It cracks me up how many families go into the session ready to bribe their children with treats and toys to get them to smile. After enough playing, they start to come pretty naturally. Sarah is a good friend of mine and we have had so much fun doing her sessions this year. We started with her maternity portraits in May, then Stella's one month portraits in July, 3 month portraits in September, and finally her 5 month and family pictures this November. It's so fun to watch her grow and document the little milestones along the way!

3 Times the Love! {Seattle Family Photographer}

I had so much fun photographing this family. This session also took place during my busiest photography weekend of the year. The forecast kept saying rain, but every session totally lucked out! This adorable family of 5 was such a pleasure to work with. The big sisters kept giving their little brother all sorts of love. I looked over at mom and dad and asked, "Do they always get along this well?" They rolled their eyes and told me the girls were putting on a show. Well it worked and made for some amazing pictures. A Typical Day in the Life of a Child

I had so much fun working with this family. Our rainy day backup plan was to shoot in the library, but while it was dry out we ran to the park. Check out these super cute kids and their wonderful parents. You could tell they enjoyed spending time together!

It Can Only Get Better, Right? {Kent Senior Photographer}

Brittany is a senior at Kentlake. She had no idea she needed to be prepared for such a dramatic morning. It had been pouring all night and was off and on before our session. We decided to try for outdoors and now are so glad we did. As she was getting dressed, she realized she left her jeans at home and only had her leggings for all her outfits. Then she went to put on her new purple Uggs from Nordstrom and realized they gave her two left feet! So she was pretty discouraged to begin with, but once we started shooting, it all faded away. The weather held out for us, the scenery was beautiful, the humidity gave her hair the perfect amount of curl. All in all, the pictures turned out amazing and she quickly forgot the drama of the past!

A Sunny Halloween {Issaquah Family Photographer}

We were preparing for the worst scenario since rain had been in the forecast. Well an hour before the session and the sun was still out, we were elated, but had to change plans fast. We came up with a quick plan to meet in the beautiful sunshine instead of indoors. What a gorgeous backdrop of the Seattle and Bellevue skyline. Who would ever believe we had a sunny Halloween?

He's looking so grown up and mature!

On Halloween day, you have to take a picture of a first grader in at least part of his costume, right?

Dancing the Night Away {Bellevue Dance Photographer}

These dancers all have a competition coming up in December. As soloists, they are required to have dance pictures for the judges to look at and they also get published in the programs. I used to dance at this studio and they asked me to take the girls' pictures. I had so much fun. These talented girls were great to work with!

I love doing senior sessions in the first place, but when the senior has a bold and creative personality, well, that's just an amazing bonus!!! Alicia is musical, smart, funny, and very sweet. Retakes in the Sun {Auburn Family Photographer}

This family was photographed last December. On the day of our shoot, it poured rain. We weren't able to get any outdoor shots and instead photographed the 6 of them inside, wearing white, against white walls. So before the weather turned foul, we made sure to get some outdoor shots this year. And lucky for us, the weather was sunny and for the most part, warm. The pictures turned out great. Siblings in a Park {Seattle Senior Photographer}

I ran a deal on http://www.localtwist.com/ a couple of weeks ago and it has brought lots of new costumers I would not have met otherwise. This family is one of those that I was lucky to come in contact with. They realized they needed senior pictures for their daughter, but that they would also like some updated pictures of their son (sophomore in college). They live in this beautiful old house full of character! We had lots of fun shooting inside and darting outside between rain showers for some fall shots and shots in Tubs parking lot! Walking on Sunshine {Maple Valley Senior Photographer}

What a perfect day for senior portraits. The bright sun made it a challenge, but also provided lots of cool opportunities for being photographed in a forest. Melissa was in search of fall colors, so we left the forest trait and headed to a local park to find more color. Have you ever noticed how the prettiest trees are in parking lots or on the side of the road? They are not the prettiest place to get pictures, but we made it work. Enjoy Melissa's senior portrait!

Indie Hipster and a Love of Audrey Hepburn {Seattle Senior Photographer}

This wonderful family was referred to me by a great friend. Their daughter is 2 1/2 months old and these are their first professional pictures of her and of their new family. We had planned to meet at a park but after a downpour, we decided we should just do it in their home. We got some great shots of the family looking very comfortable and in their natural setting.

The Wonders of Lightroom

I belong to a photography club. There are probably about 8-10 regulars. We range from beginners to experienced. I love this group because we all have something to learn and are all willing to share our expertise. Each month we have a challenge or just bring in our best photos from the month to share and critique.

Below is a photo taken by a member of our group. She is just getting into photography. She liked her photo but didn't know how to edit it to make it pop. We tried playing with her Elements, but between not having a mouse and my unfamiliarity with Elements, we gave up. She emailed me the photo and I played with it for one minute in Lightroom. I love Lightroom! It's so quick and easy. I'm all about the sliders. Below is her original and my edit. I'm not normally a software snob, but I have to brag about what an incredible and EASY-to-learn program Adobe Lightroom is.

Stripes and Giggles {Bellevue Family Photographer}

This precious family was so much fun to photograph. We had fun exploring the Bellevue Botanical Gardens. The three year old even found a secret door. She was convinced a monster was inside but she still was determined to get in.

I also want you to notice their outfits. I love how each member of the family has a different color shirt on, yet the girls' sweaters totally bring in all the colors. I adore the green and pink colors among all the dark greens. This was a perfect example of dressing your family like one big outfit, coordinating, but not matchy matchy!

A Day in the Gardens {Seattle Family Photographer}

I love any chance I get to spend with my family. I especially love being able to capture the different stages of life on camera for them. This is my husband's brother and his family. We had fun playing at the Rose Garden in Seattle last weekend. And depite the rough start they that morning, the boys were perfectly content when they arrived. They Grow Up So Fast {Seattle Baby Photographer}

Stella is already three months. You can see her last shoot here and her mommy's maternity session here. I've only photographed newborns and one year olds. But this three month thing is amazing! Stella was so aware of the camera, had lots of cute smiles, and wasn't fussy at all. I couldn't believe how easy the session was and how adorable the pictures turned out.

The Two Shall Become One {Seattle Wedding Photographer}

I love shooting weddings. You just never know what you're going to get, what the day will be like, how relaxed/stressed the bridal party will be, etc. There are so many unknowns and I love challenges. However, I can't really claim that this was at all a challenge. At the reception, the other photographer and I were sitting there, eating an amazing meal, getting know some of the newlywed's friends. We looked at each other, started smiling, and I said, "I can't believe I get paid to do this!"

If I hadn't done a destination wedding to Hawaii, this would have been my other dream wedding. Everyone was so relaxed, friendly, and the scenery couldn't have been more beautiful.

I was a second shooter for Luna Bella Events, so again, I cannot post pictures of the couples' faces. Enjoy!

Michelle and her family were the winners of the contest I held in the spring. What perfect timing, Michelle is due with a baby girl in four months. My First Wedding {Seattle Portrait Photographer}

This summer I was offered to be a second shooter for Luna Bella Events wedding photography. This was my first wedding I was at, it took place in Mukilteo. As per my contract, I'm not allowed to post pictures of faces, so hopefully this will give you a brief idea. I surprisingly really enjoy shooting weddings. The stress, anxiety, joy, purity, and bliss of it all! Which means that I now like every kind of photography and have no idea how I'm going to narrow down my photography specialties. Oh well, I guess that will happen with time.

William turned one in April. We were so excited to do one year portraits with him. His mom and I had all sorts of ideas. You can see some pictures from the session here. Well, try telling a one year old to sit in a certain place and look a certain way, it just wasn't going to happen. So after that first session, we back tracked and decided to just get some spontaneous shots of him. This session was much more successful and the results are adorable. Here are some of my favorites.

I convinced my sister-in-law that it was time to do family photos. The weather has been delightful, the kids were healthy, and there would be no better time. Well you just can't plan for the temperament of four strong-willed individuals on a given day. This happened to be one of those days. I even had the opportunity to be at their house as they were getting ready. Not having kids yet myself, I didn't realize what an ordeal it was to get everyone dressed, fed, and happy (or not). I now have compassion for those of you with families trying to get ready for a photo shoot. Don't let it deter you from getting those special pictures done, because as you can see, a good photographer can always get some good shots. Here are a couple of my favorites from the evening.

The Tice family recieved this session as a baby shower gift and they couldn't have been more thrilled. We had the session three weeks after Taylor was born. She was perfect, sleeping when we wanted her to be sleeping and awake when we wanted her awake. The only thing we couldn't do very often was get her to look at the camera. It's funny how some babies (and adults) have camera avoidance. (= Here are some of my favorites of the young family.

Ring Demon {Seattle Commercial Photographer}

Okay, I have to admit I was a little nervous about photographing these MMA fighters. My husband will sometimes watch Ultimate Fighting (MMA- mixed martial arts) on TV. It freaks me out, it's so violent. However, before I went, someone explained to me that the owner of Ring Demon, Eric Dahlberg, has a theory that these guys have demons inside of them. Teaching them MMA provides a healthy outlet for getting that anger and violence out. That started making me feel a little better because it's not like they are walking on the streets getting into these fights.

Anyway, the day arrived and when the fighters walked in, they were laughing and smiling, there were even two girls there! Plus, it wasn't just me photographing, a few of us from the Issaquah Highlands Photography Club did this as a little "field trip". So anyway, I had a total blast making the pictures dramatic and intense. Here are some of my favorites.

Road Trip {Seattle Family Photographer}

The day after we got back from Hawaii, we took off again. My husband, father, and step-mom drove from Washington to Montana, through Yellowstone, to Rock Springs, Wyoming, to Steamboat, Colorado where we met family and helped celebrate my grandma's 80th birthday. While we were there we decided to update some of our family pictures.
